As employers we all know that productivity drops when we are subject to extreme temperature rises during the summer months. When looking at your staff wellbeing you need to remember that some employees are more vulnerable to exposure to excess heat. These include the elderly, pregnant women, outdoor and manual workers.
How does heat impact health?
Heat gain in the human body can be caused by a combination of external heat from the environment and internal body heat generated from metabolic processes. Rapid rises in heat gain due to exposure to hotter than average conditions compromise the body’s ability to regulate temperature and can result in a cascade of illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and hyperthermia.
What can you do to help?
- Aim to keep the working environment cool. Check the room temperature, ideally the room temperature should be between 19-22°C.
- If your office is air conditioned, close the doors and windows to ensure maximum impact.
- Where the is no air-conditioning electric fans may provide relief.
- Drink regularly but avoid alcohol and too much caffeine and sugar.
Taking these steps can help improve your staff wellbeing and productivity throughout the summer months.
